Chlorine Removal
Super Pets is located in Fairfax
County. Fairfax County uses chlorine for disinfection purposes, which can be harmful
to fish if not dechlorinated prior to placing fish in an aquarium. The Fairfax
County Water Authority uses two types of chlorine, free chlorine and chloramines (chlorine
and ammonia mixture). Chloramines are normally used June - February, and free
chlorine is generally used March - May. Super Pets recommends the use of a product
called Amquel. AmQuel® is the state-of-the-art in water conditioning technology.
AmQuel® quickly and effectively removes ammonia, chlorine and chloramines. AmQuel®
is completely unlike declorinators which claim to "remove" chloramines. These
products only break the chlorine-ammonia bond of chloramines by simple dechlorination,
leaving the ammonia in the water. The resulting ammonia must be removed by adsorption on
granular or powdered zeolites (clinoptilolites). In addition, AmQuel® functions as well
in salt water as it does in fresh water; whereas zeolites do not remove ammonia in salt
water. Dosage: For control of ammonia and chloramines add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) to 10
gallons of fresh or salt water. The pH of the water being treated affects the speed
at which AmQuel® works. The lower the pH, the slower AmQuel® works. At a pH of 7.0
(neutral) AmQuel® will remove the ammonia in less than 5 minutes. AmQuel® is
harmless to plants, fishes and invertebrates. This product is safe for use in aquariums
and ponds and will not interfere with normal biological filtration. AmQuel® is compatible with NovAqua® and is recommended for
full chlorine removal and reduction in the amount of stress on fish. AmQuel should
not be added to water containing active, therapeutic dosages of dyes such as methylene
blue, acriflavine, or malachite green, since AmQuel will interfere with their proper
performance. Compatible with test kits
using salicylate reagents. Not for use with test kits using Nessler reagents, since
it will produce false readings.
